When I was a little girl I used to watch my mom sew and my grandmothers crochet, knit and embroider. Soon they were my instructors and as I learned it made me feel more connected to them. As I make dolls now, memories of how I first learned how to sew on a button, a bit of lace or how to use satin stitch to embroider an eye, rush up to the surface. All of those loving teaching moments that touched my life forever and helped shape the artistic part of me.
I have just finished three special custom dolls for Christmas gifts. I wish I could be there when these little girls open up their own doll on Christmas morning! It makes me feel special that what I learned as a little girl is now making other little girls happy. It is a joy to make them, but the best part is how much the recipients love them. Each one has it's own little personality as it is being completed.
Sometimes the outfit is made first and then it all comes together as I choose the fabric skin tone, the eye and hair color...and the doll has revealed itself.
